Mulberry Silk and BlueSoft™ Microfiber: What Are These Materials?
Silk
It took us 9 months to find the right natural silk for MOLODO.
After all, it was going to be the fabric you would touch for almost a third of your life.
Why natural silk?
Mirоslava’s family still keeps her mother’s silk shirts, some of which are several decades old. They were one of the first reasons we took a closer look at this material.
As far back as ancient China, silk was used not only for clothing, but also for items associated with sleep. What people had observed in practice for centuries can now be explained by science.
Every night, your hair and skin spend hours in contact with your pillow: rubbing against the fabric, bending and stretching. Each movement may seem insignificant on its own. But they happen night after night.
Research into hair structure shows that mechanical friction can gradually damage the cuticle — the hair’s outer protective layer. The more damaged the cuticle, the rougher the hair surface becomes, making it easier for the hair to tangle and creating even more friction over time.
100% silk helps break this cycle.
Its smooth surface creates less resistance: hair glides across the fabric instead of constantly catching on it. Less friction means less unnecessary mechanical stress on the cuticle — for up to eight hours every night.
What about the skin?
While we sleep, our facial skin also remains pressed against the pillow for hours. When we change positions, the skin is exposed to compression, tension and shear. Researchers associate this type of mechanical pressure with characteristic sleep lines — creases that appear not because of facial expressions, but because of the position of the face during sleep.
Silk does not “rejuvenate” the skin or erase wrinkles. But its smooth surface can help reduce unnecessary friction during this repeated nightly contact.
The smooth fibers of silk create a gentle surface for prolonged contact with the skin. This is also why silk has been studied in dermatology, particularly as a material for people with sensitive and atopic skin.
Why our MOLODO silk?
After 9 months of searching, we chose 100% Mulberry Silk, 22 momme — smooth, durable silk designed for everyday use.
Its particularly dense weave adds strength and helps the fabric retain its shape, smoothness and properties for longer.
The material is produced at a facility certified to the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which sets requirements for organic textiles at different stages of production — from raw materials to processing and dyeing. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 confirms that the textile has been tested for a broad range of potentially harmful substances.
We source it directly from the manufacturer and work with them exclusively.
Microfiber BlueSoft™
Hair does not like staying wet. But it likes aggressive drying even less.
After a shower, most of us do the same thing: tightly wrap our hair in a heavy terry towel. It seems like the quickest way to dry it.
In reality, this is when hair is at its most vulnerable.
Wet hair is weaker. The longer it stays wet, the longer it remains more vulnerable to stretching, deformation and mechanical damage.
That is why we use BlueSoft™ Microfiber — a material designed for gentle hair drying that retains its texture and softness over time. Its purpose is simple: to remove excess water as quickly as possible while being as gentle as possible.
Why not a terry towel?
The loops of terry fabric create more contact with the hair surface and can catch on the cuticle, increasing mechanical friction as the towel is wrapped and the hair moves inside it.
BlueSoft™ Microfiber works differently.
Its ultra-fine fibers quickly absorb excess water without requiring intensive rubbing.
This means hair spends less time wet and less time under mechanical stress.
And laboratory research supports this principle:
In 2023, researchers at the University of Minho in Portugal compared what happens to the keratin structure of hair after different drying methods.
They analyzed hair after air drying, blow-drying and towel drying.
The study confirmed two important points.
- First, hair should not remain wet for extended periods, as its structure is more sensitive to mechanical stress when wet.
- Second, the way water is removed matters. The less unnecessary mechanical stress during drying, the better for the hair surface.
This is exactly why we chose BlueSoft™ Microfiber: it quickly absorbs excess water while remaining lightweight and gentle on wet hair.
This principle is at the heart of our silk turban — a MOLODO bestseller that has become part of the hair routines of thousands of women over the past 6 years.
Both Mulberry Silk and BlueSoft™ Microfiber are more than just pleasant to the touch. Both have international certifications for quality and safety.
